You have the flexibility to control the line from the cockpit or secure it directly to the kicker using additional tackle. Available in five models tailored to boats between 30 and 62 feet, the length of the kicker can be customized during installation to meet your specific requirements.

This kicker, manufactured from anodized aluminum in either silver or black, consists of two telescoping tubes equipped with specialized connection terminals featuring integrated pulleys. This design facilitates a streamlined line tackle solution that can be routed to the cockpit or fastened to the kicker itself with extra tackle and a sheet. The effective spring mechanism enables exact thrust adjustment by simply rotating the tube or upper terminal.

Utilizing the Vang or Kicking Strap

In sailing, the vang, often referred to as a kicking strap, is essential for mainsail adjustment. Nautical terms for line and pulley systems may vary, with 'kicker' typically referencing the line system, while 'vang' may pertain to rod or hydraulic systems. Nevertheless, these phrases may be used interchangeably among crew members.

The function of the vang is crucial when altering mainsail position. Common adjustment methods include the halyard and traveler, which adjust the angle of attack but also alter the sail's shape with halyard adjustments leading to twist at the trailing edge.

When sailing downwind, it's often necessary to loosen the halyard to align the sail optimally with the wind. However, neglecting the vang during this adjustment can result in excessive mast rise and reduced sail power.

To maintain optimal sail performance, ensure the vang is properly adjusted while loosening the halyard to keep the mast down and tension intact on the trailing edge. Over-tightening the vang, especially after close-hauled sailing, necessitates adjustment when changing course to avoid undue stress on the system.

Managing vang tension can be challenging under significant load. If the vang is engaged in a jammer, it’s essential to shift the load to the winch first, utilizing a winch handle to ensure smooth operation.

Since rapid de-powering of the mainsail is often needed, it's wise to keep the vang's weight on a winch with the jammer open while on a reach or deeper breezes. Many captains will have a crew member monitoring the vang, ready to release it at a moment's notice to prevent broaching or if the helm veers too far into the wind.

For close-hauled sailing, the vang should be adjusted securely by hand, and in racing scenarios approaching overpowering conditions, a crew member should remain poised to release the vang as needed.

Proper vang adjustments or backstay tensioning significantly enhance yacht handling and speed, effectively reducing mainsail power when required.

When adjusting the mast’s height during a drop, loosening the vang is vital. Failing to do so obstructs the de-powering process and may prevent the mast from ascending naturally when the drop line tightens.
